The idea of ‘in-between’ is for me, crucial to all my artistic endeavours. It is only in the grey areas that exist between rigid fixed positions that open ended dialogue, rather than prosaic monologues are possible.
Daniel Hosego engages in an ideas driven practice that is stimulated by a desire to explore the role of the artist and challenge the institutions and conventions that are fundamental to all artistic endeavors. He attempts to engage his audience in an open ended conversation rather than a prosaic monologue. Situating his work in liminal positions and asking the viewer to define for themselves where the particular boundaries lie.
This fluidity extends into Daniel’s choice of materials. Choosing them as appropriate to the specific needs of an idea, rather than remaining true to any in particular. He’s drawn to working in three dimensions, on scales ranging from the epic to the deliberately underwhelming and in a wide variety of media. The materials and processes are coloured by a desire to demonstrate the artists hand in the construction of the artworks and thus imply his own continual wrestling with the afore mentioned themes.
He appropriates from the deep pool of imagery available in art history rather than creating anything entirely original. The inherent connotations in this appropriated content allow Daniel to transport the artwork and audience beyond the traditional constrains of subject matter. Taking it to a point where they can question the interdependent relationship between artist, artwork and viewer on a deeper conceptual level.
